Today... a Fabulous day!

All too often do we tend to write about things to complain. I would like to take a moment and tell you about my Fabulous weekend.

On Friday I worked with a group of young people connecting them with alumni... a networking initiative. There, an opportunity presented itself for me to ask a company that was present to assist in one of my fundraising goals... they said yes! Took my mama to our homecoming pep rally and put final touches on a project I was working on for a wonderful lady.

On Saturday, I hosted 4 alumni and their guest in our box at the university, while at the same time scheduling them a tour of a few areas in which I thought they may show interest. During one of the tailgates we visited I got a verbal commitment from a fraternity to help me with one of my fundraising goals... Left our game a little after half time to go to a friend's family reunion. There I saw her children who I had either met or talked to and met many of her family members that were funny and sweet, boy do i cherish time with loved ones. That evening I also met her nephew who is well known in this day and age. He was a rather down to earth gentleman that I wish I would have had more of an opportunity to talk to but I didn't want to be "that girl" ... in every attempt to respect his family time. If it is truly meant for me to talk with him my belief that other opportunities will appear... it has happened before ...

On Sunday I traveled with the family to tour their land ... that was home to an ancestral cemetery ... and the inner nerd in me took over...wanting to take pictures of the toombstones and research them to "tell their family story" ...

all in all a blessed weekend!

I received this in an email from a dear college friend earlier this month. I thought it would make many of your laugh. Have a great week!

1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the heck are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.

13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.

17. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?

20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

22. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.

23. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

24. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important. Ladies.....Quit Laughing ;)

As I stood in a store just outside Seattle Washington I read the following inspirational passage credited to Mother Teresa. My research indicates that the following version is found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta. The original version is known as The Paradoxical Commandments written by Dr. Kent M. Keith in 1968.

I have a dear friend who has started blogging frequently and asks me why do I not do so. I have tried many times to make it a daily or even weekly accomplishment but I tend to blog when the mood hits me. So here is my attempt yet again to start blogging frequently...

Years ago as I prepared for a pageant. One of the prep questions that has stuck with me through the years is ...

"Love, Money, or Education. What would you want most and why?"

So that is the question I ask you... As I grew older my answer has changed. I initially responded education... because a good education leads to money ... and somewhere along the way you hope to find love.

However, today I cannot say my answer is the same... let me here your responses... and then I will share where my head is with this question today...

Today's food for thought... I received an email from one of my best friends this morning highlighting the following article... read and then provide feedback... I would like to know what you think...

ummm... wouldn't it actually be the opposite though? Think about it. If I don't need you to take care of me, wouldn't that make me low maintenance on your end.

This blog thing... I can go months without saying a word... then again I have something to say everyday...lol... who knows... the one thing I notice is that I tend to write more in the last months of a year or if there is something major going on and I think to write... I think that I do this because I want to share my experiences and thoughts with others... as a year comes to a close or when a major life event occurs maybe it is then I am in my greatest point of reflection realizing how important some things are to me or I may be simply seeking an outlet to express myself....

You see God has blessed me with wonderful parents, a great boyfriend, a loving family and awesome friends.

I do not know if I tell them thank you enough.... so I take this time and space to say... THANK YOU

I have been blessed with parents that have ALWAYS been there for me and go out of their way to do what they can for me. Who listen and offer advice (not always what I want to hear but advice nonetheless). You must understand I was a VERY involved child... from pageants, to school, to countless activities....one if not both of them where there. They taught me what they new/know and encouraged me to learn what they may not have experience in... they taught/teach me to be a good person .. and for that and so much more I want to say THANK YOU

Now onto my boyfriend.... you see my boyfriend is my high school sweetheart... at the age of 16 the 2nd time I REMEMBER seeing him... I feel in love... but I thought then who falls in love at 16... so I think i did many things to sabotage it.... I want to thank him for falling in love with me all over again, for being there, for listening for debating (sometimes :) ) for challenging me, for opening my eyes, for being my best friend. He is one of the most genuine and precious hearts you will ever want to meet... no everything is not perfect but that is why it is called a relationship... something you build and approve upon to make stronger. He gave me a card that I feel helps to explain it...

"The ups, the downs, the twists and turns, the love that keeps us together through it all...And I love looking back to the day we met, remembering all the sweet moments that are forever in my heart. There are good and bad times...

I may not believe exactly what everyone else does or how I was raised exactly, but I do believe there is a God. I believe in the power of being positive, even though sometimes it is easier said than done and you wouldn't always believe me if you saw me.

See I believe a negative attitude can take you to negative places... mentally and emotionally and sometimes physically. That is why I challenge you today to be positive... even when times are hard....

Example 1: I may not have people who can or want to give at the level that I am required to raise but I worked hard to get enough little gifts that they could equal several annual gifts at the level I am required

Example 2: I may not feel good but when I walk into a room where my boyfriend and father are making me laugh... I appreciate that moment... the time spent with two wonderful people in my life...

I could go on but I hope you get the picture.. be positive appreciate all little things. Learn from mistakes and make your life better... CLAIM IT!

This scripture came to me about a month ago...
I was driving along heard it on the radio, when I got to church I must say I heard what the preacher said.. but was enveloped in how the pastor on the radio had presented this scripture in such a short time and it stuck with me...

So today when I rose (I didn't have no doubt)...lol...(funny to those who grew up in a black baptist church)... but i digress.... I shared the scripture via facebook again but with more detail, brought out a notebook and wrote down things that I claimed in His name today...

At this time I share it with you...

" 'Write down the revelation & make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end & will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come &will not delay.'" Habakkuk 2: 2-3.

This morning I woke up claimed what is mine and wrote it down. As I said I have shared this before but didn't act until today! My friend Denise and I used to do this annual in January... they started off as resolutions but then we revised it to goals that can be edited throughout the year... I will share with you one I wrote in the past... it will be added in a while...

Black Female Hair… Comedy or Complex?

Part I: The thoughts of a NNS…

Yesterday I was hanging out at the pool and was thinking… man it sucks to have “nappy” black hair as a female…not that I am ungrateful …. I just started thinking… I wouldn’t mind going swimming, washing my hair daily, or learning how to swim if I had “good hair” or if I was wealthy enough to get my hair done daily (i.e. Oprah…or the stories of Oprah).

Then I began to think how many black swimmers …FEMALE swimmers do you see… haven’t researched it yet but I suspect not a large number. Then I began to think about water rides at amusement parks how the little “black” girl that got wet hair starts to get poofy while her friend of other ethnicities may dry wavy but is still manageable.

As I began to write my last two reports for the day I was going through my mail and saw an invitation had been returned… I went to that friends website and there it was again… another reminder about black hair… it was a trailer for the movie “good hair” … a comedy or at least set up as one but my question is .. is it a comedy… or complex…

I know I myself try to laugh it off… joking I look like a cotton ball or a dirty q-tip with wet hair. Then I watched the trailer that made me think… wow we spend so much money on our hair that other people do not have to (kind of a life expense if we choose or is it a choice)… trying to look our best… we spend money and if you have been to a typical hairdresser in the south… TIME… which in many cases is just as valuable… Not all black women have “nappy” hair and those that don’t are often the envy of her naturally nappy haired sisters (NNS)….

As I watched the trailer I also noticed how much we NNS spend on relaxers, extensions, wigs, etc… and it just made me begin to type this blog… not that this is going any farther than my computer screen to yours…
I am the kind of female that tries to solve problems… but I don’t have a solution for this one… there are many NNS that say you are trying to be another ethnicity by straightening your hair… or say you aren’t keeping it real… but truth is … I personally like the straight look…it is my and many others preference … and another fact is that society looks at our “natural” look as unprofessional… not to say that it is or isn’t but it brings me to recall a recent conversation with a very close friend… I said… “what do you think about me getting braids” .. their response… “you are too conservative”… they may be right …

The more I think of my nappy hair it frustrates me… there is nothing I can really do about it without drawing attention to myself…

Have you ever been shopping and saw something that would be perfect for someone you know? If you have a few extra dollars… buy it… give it to them… it may just make their day.

I truly believe that there are simple pleasures in life that can make a difference in someone’s day. VACATION DAY! HA! Dunkin’ Donuts Grand Opening(Clemson) – Computer & Car Issues

So we arrive in Clemson at about 4:30, get our stuff out and my parents and grandmother are on their way. Kris then remembers me talking about Dunkin’ Donuts opening at 5AM July 28th. So we get the keys and run to the car … to a dead battery… I then suggest walking so then we have an excuse to eat whatever we are about to consume. Kris agrees and we are off! We walk down the street to this (please see picture below)… college students, locals, children and parents, all in line. We began laughing and get in line.

Now what is funny and you must understand is that we were going because Kris ALWAYS asks for bagels in the morning and there is nowhere in Clemson where we can go grab a fresh bagel so he has been talking about the opening of DD since we read in the paper that it was on it’s way… so we arrive not knowing about the “free stuff”… we ended up getting two free breakfast each, a magnet, and registered to win whatever else they were giving away (which I personally didn’t even read). They simply said put your name and number on the back of your receipt and stick it in a box. We did so, went outside enjoyed our bagels and were off home. About noon I get a call from DD Cooperate telling me I had won two tickets to the Clemson/Citadel Game! I just started laughing and hope I said thank you!

I go to use my computer and remember the motherboard being replaced well… in this transaction I have lost the wep key to get into my own network AND the Clemson wireless network! UGH! And remember the car… yeah…. The battery died and well.. let’s just say THANK GOD KRIS & MY DADDY. Kris and I got it jumped off today and my wonderful Daddy who is going to try to take it to the dealership tomorrow while I go to work…. What a way to spend my vacation day working on my computer and car…I will be taking another…I just have meetings and things to do tomorrow! But at least I won tickets & got to hang out with my family and baby!God is GREAT!

Checkout & The 25th Gholston Picnic

Well, checkout was MONSTEROUS! This hotel was VERY understaffed especially for this weekend! I looked at my receipt briefly and then went on a mission to find my parents a cart (OH MY GOODNESS). Need I remind you again, three family reunions, a Christian conference (where all attending appeared to be dressed to the 9s meaning LOTS OF LUGGAGE), and White Sox/Tigers fans!. There MAY have been three people at the front desk if that… so between everyone asking me 10zillion times if I knew how to get to the picnic (after I told them as long as the place has an address and we have VZ Navigator all would be fine), figuring out the tricks of how to catch an empty elevator, and getting the car pulled around I didn’t look at my receipt again. We get to the picnic with no trouble, enjoy our time there (See pictures below), took Davida to the airport, and were on the road again.

Since there was no schedule of events listed for us besides the banquet that evening we then decided to go on our own adventure which took us to Motown where we did the tour of Motown, which was AWESOME!. Loved the music, loved the tour, loved the heritage… it was fun and informative for all of us. We then decided to go to Canada for a bit (this is where the getting late to the family meeting came in). We went out for salsa and had just missed the lessons, therefore had a few drinks and then headed to Greektown because Davida didn't get to go with Kris and me the night before. Here is where the second funny part of our day came in...we agreed all to bet only $10 each... I recall Davida showing me a ticket for $6 she won and another for $9.23... well... the next thing I know I see Davida with no tickets and no cash and I was like what happened to your ticket... "The machine took my money"... my response... "What do you MEAN the machine took your money... do you mean it was a mechanical error or your lost it?" she responded that it "took her money" so Kris tells her to take us to the machine... luckily no one had sat at it. What she had not realized was it was in a bonus round that called for her to participate in a touch screen portion of the game. So she and Kris sat and touched the screen. To make a long story short when we got to the machine she was down to like $1.20 and when they were finish touhing the screen she had won a little over $150!...lol...

So we arrive in Detroit a little afternoon with Daddy and Kris doing most of the driving. Thank goodness I am a Starwood Member because otherwise we may just have to TKO someone. So my room was ready when we arrived, but not my parents. Now technically check in was not until 3:00 pm but service at the front desk was slow and annoying and YES I DO write customer reviews. They need to be better staffed. There were like 3 reunions, a Christian convention, and people who were visiting for the Tigers/White Sox games. Needless to say the hotel was PACKED! In the meantime trusty VZ Navigator took Kris, Daddy, and I to DTW to pick up Davida. When we returned everyone was trying to check in and the parents’ room was finally ready. We move all my parents, and grandmother’s luggage down to their floor and nap. Later that evening Kris and I were a little late for the family meet and greet at the firehouse across the street from the hotel. (IMPORTANT because we think we catch all details but miss some key ones  ) . Kris and I then walk my mama and grandmother back across the street to the hotel and are off adventuring. We find a restaurant called Vistente Cuban Cuisine where we enjoyed tapas and a beautiful city view from our street side dining. While there we hear that they offer Salsa lessons Friday and Saturday evening and make plans to return for the following evening. We return the hotel where we meet musicians and engineers on the Angela Winbush tour. They were a lot of fun. Hope to get a video of Preiester showing my sister to play the drum he was carrying around on facebook later., but I may face some censorship from my sister.

I am in Austin at the Library Development Officer's Conference, ALADN. I arrived on Saturday and have met some great people with great ideas since. This year I also felt that I could share what I am doing, which also made me feel good to be able to contribute to the conversation. This evening's blog is taken word from word from a fellow blogger ENTERTAINMENT ONLINE BLOG. I had just watched the movie Homeless to Harvardand I felt it was exactly what I had hoped to share and even had a photograph of Liz.

Liz Murray (born September 23, 1980 in The Bronx, New York) is an American whose success story has spread around the world. She is known for being the homeless girl wandering the slums of New York, who eventually turns her life around once she realizes she is not doomed to experience life on the streets. Determined and confident, she strives for and succeeds at becoming a student at Harvard University. Her story was told in an Emmy-nominated Lifetime TV movie Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story.

Murray, whose life was chronicled in the Lifetime television movie Homeless to Harvard, was the keynote speaker at Bryan's back-to-school convocation at Central Baptist Church.

"The greatest challenge really came not in my circumstances, but in believing in what I did," Murray told more than 6,000 Bryan school employees Friday. "No matter what the circumstances were, I had a choice."

By age 15, Murray's mother had died of AIDS and Liz was homeless - living on the streets, riding on the subway all night, and eating from the dumpsters. While a majority of us would have given up on life, amidst the pain, Murray always imagined the her life could be much better than it was.

"I started to grasp the value of the lessons learned while living on the streets. I knew, after overcoming those daily obstacles, that next to nothing could hold me down."

Determined to take charge of her life, Murray pulled herself together, enrolled in a charter school in New York and completed all four years of high school in just two years. This was all done while Murray was still homeless. At the encouragement of a mentor, she went on to earn a scholarship from the New York Times and entered Harvard University in 2000. Although she began her college career at Harvard, she eventually transferred to Columbia University to be closer to her father who is dying from AIDS.

Murray narrated how she and her older sister had lived in a trash-strewn, filthy apartment in the Bronx. Their parents were drug addicts, and when the welfare check came at the first of each month, the family of four would go to the "drug spot" and her parents would buy cocaine and heroin, Murray said.

Alia Sabur - AMAZING 19 year old!

Perhaps in Alia Sabur’s wildly advanced studies she came across a famous quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

“Knowing is not enough. We must apply,” the German writer once observed.

That could serve as explanation for what prompted the 19-year-old to become the youngest college professor in history.

Armed with prodigious wisdom, Sabur told TODAY’s Ann Curry on Wednesday that knowledge is power — especially when sharing it.

“I really enjoy teaching,” said Sabur. “It’s something where you can make a difference. It’s not just what you can do, but you can enable a lot of other people to make their changes.”

Sabur, from Northport, N.Y., has clearly been ahead of the learning curve since an early age.

She started talking and reading when she was just 8 months old. She had elementary school finished at age 5.

She made the jump to college at age 10. And by age 14, Sabur was earning a bachelor’s of science degree in applied mathematics summa cum laude from Stony Brook University — the youngest female in U.S. history to do so.

Her education continued at Drexel University, where she earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering.

With an unlimited future ahead of her, Sabur directed her first career choice to teaching. She was three days short of her 19th birthday in February when she was hired to become a professor at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea.

This distinction made her the youngest college professor in history, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, beating the previous record held by Colin Maclaurin in 1717.

Maclaurin was a student of physicist Isaac Newton. Sabur said she is merely gravitating toward putting what she has learned to good use.

“I really feel I can help a lot of people,” she said.

At Konkuk University, Sabur said she will take part in classroom instruction, but will also focus on research into developing nanotubes for use as cellular probes that could help aid in cures for diseases.

Although she doesn’t start until next month, Sabur has taken up teaching math and physics courses at Southern University in New Orleans, which is still struggling from the devastation left in Hurricane Katrina’s wake in 2005.

“Some people come and they do Habitat for Humanity and they build houses, but I don’t think I would be very good,” she said. “So I tried to do what I’m good at. I was particularly interested in this university because they are still in trailers after Hurricane Katrina. And I thought it could be something I do to help.”

In New Orleans, Sabur is old enough to teach, but not to join her fellow professors in a bar after work. In Korea, where the drinking age is 20, she might have more luck. In traditional Korean culture, children are considered to be 1 year old when they are born, and add a year to their age every New Year instead of their actual birthday, so in Korea Sabur is considered 20.

Varied interests
On top of her unprecedented academic achievements, Sabur has a black belt in the Korean martial art of tae kwon do and is also a music prodigy. She has been playing clarinet with orchestras since her solo debut at age 11, playing with recording artists Lang Lang and Smash Mouth.

“You can reach a lot of people with music,” Sabur told Curry. “It’s never been really a hobby to me. It’s always been on equal par with my academics.”

So is there anything Sabur can’t do?

Well, apparently she struggles with basketball and with long writing and admits to sometimes being absentminded.

In fact, sometimes she forgets just how special she really is.

“Well, I know that what I’ve done is special and I think about it,” she said. “But sometimes I forget, because I’m used to it and I don’t think about it all the time. Actually, sometimes it takes other people to remind me a little bit.”

I found her story truly amazing and though she is an extremely blessed and gifted person I believe this is a point of inspiration for many young people. I hope you enjoyed.

She is not only book smart but muscially gifted as well. She plays the clarinet & is a black belt in the martial arts of TKD. She is absolutely amazing!

My parents are two of the most awesome people you ever want to meet. I know that a lot of children say that about their parents but for me... mine are. Today they have been married for 41 years and I admire them for that among many other reasons. No things are not always perfect, nor always happy, but God knows there are many smiles, laughs, and joyous times I have with those two. I would just like to take a moment to congratulate them on 41 years of marriage and I pray for them many more and hope to live up to their example.

Have you ever had a start over day?

Have you ever had a start over day? I do not wish times away which is why I don't want a "hurry up and pass day". Each moment is precious and important which is why I would like a start over day today. Starting over does not mean EVERYTHING is going wrong but just enough to annoy...Today is one of those days that my blog is simply a vent of my feelings.

- I must have turned my alarm clock off when I thought I hit snooze
- I have misplaced my work phone
- I couldn't find a parking place to drop something off to my boss...
> so I parked in a service parking (POSITIVE: didn't get a ticket)
- I went to deliver packages to people who couldn't participate in the race this weekend & stop by the foundation office...a project that should have taken 30 minutues tops
> get to drop off one and there is a parking enforcement professional parked in one of 4 - 30 minute spots WHY?
> drop off two... just no parking
> drop off three... the foundation has nice parking POSTIVE:)
> drop off four.... athletics has nice parking :)
-sometime during this process I have being having throat burning like I do when I have an allergic reaction... but i haven't eaten anything... ugh... this feels horrible
-I want to get something metered but it cannot be done until someone does something
to a machine... now they wonder why I don't like doing things the way they suggest OFTEN inefficient (not a bad of those who run the machine... a annoyance of the powers that be

General Vents
- If they are going to take parking away on campus they should replace some logical spaces (i.e. you had 30 minute spaces why wouldn't you include at least ONE in the redesign)
- If you are a parking enforcement officer stopping to ticket and you can park what is known to the normal driver as illegally WHY WOULD you take up a 30 min?
- granted our university has ample parking that is FAR away from most locations, I would suggest that if there is going to be parking in far away places there should be something out there (a shop/snack stand) SOMETHING
- if you have that you are in and out of your office frequently there should be special parking or parking passes for those individuals when parking is available but a hike away

Not all bad... just one of those days to vent... not negativity but providing and sharing suggested solutions to problems ...

The Way to Happiness - A Pretty Place

This weekend Kris and I stumbled upon a place that he hasn't visited since high school. Once he realized how close we were he wanted to share with me this beautiful place... It is called "A Pretty Place" a chapel at Camp Greenville. It was absolutely beautiful and we could not have picked a better day or time of day to go. One one of the plaques in the front was a poem... The Way to Happiness.... I loved it and would like to share it with my readers.

Day 4: Course Completion, Bay Cruise, & Slide, Inc.

Hello everyone… today was my last full day in San Francisco.

Fundraising School
Fundraising School was a blast! I met great people and learned A LOT. I will not be able to go and start a planned giving program from scratch BUT I don’t have to…one already exists at my institution. With a little more reading I will feel even more confident. The instructors were great, they kept the class interesting and held my attention 97% of the time without even thinking of being sleepy. Today I received my certificate, which will be framed when I get home. Not only was the class great but I met some great people too.

Site Seeing 101
Well if you haven’t noticed from my previous blogs I have been trying to get in as many “activities” daily as possible after classes, and today was no exception. I am one who can get a lot done in a short amount of time and feel accomplished. As soon as I was handed my certificate of completion from the course I shook one of my instructor’s hands and ran to the Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise the last one of the day, and the last one that I would have been able to even try to get on. I hopped right in line and I am sooo glad I made it. It was a 90 minute tour that wasn’t too crowded. I met a nice lady from Costa Rica who insisted her cousin translate to tell me things. They were so sweet… we went toured the Bay… saw both bridges and went under the Golden Gate bridge, which I might add is ORANGE…even San Francisco sports the Clemson Spirit! (That is for you Newell). .. the tour also sailed close to Alcatraz. After finishing with the tour I walked around Pier 39 for souvenirs and just looking.

When I returned to my room I called Adora to see if she wanted to still have dinner and so I can take a picture of her AT WORK. She is so awesome! I will certainly be back to visit her! We went to the Thirsty Bear Brewery a few blocks from her job. We had a fabulous talk about the minority experience at Clemson.
She then took me back to Slide, Inc. to show me around their office. It was soooo cool to see a start up business that is so well known in action.

Tomorrow…
I will probably write the day after tomorrow and if not the weekend. I hope to get up early enough to ride the cable cars (which I have not done) and possibly walk to Ghirardelli Square but we will have to see. To all my classmates, instructors, and random people I met on this trip it was a pleasure meeting you . To my baby… I miss & love you too!!! Until next time…

Day 3: Fundrasing School, Lucus Films, Aquarium, Union Square, & Top of the Mark

Again up at 7/8AM EST… so I get up working… emailing and doing a little research… sad I know. Nevertheless, today in fundraising school I learned more tax law. I could contribute on a knowledgeable basis because our last topic covered before lunch was, endowments, which is something I have asked enough questions about & could even share my library endowment page.

Then off to catch a cab to visit two Clemson Alumni here in California that work for Lucas Films, James & Chris (hence the picture in front of the Yoda fountain).
Hopefully you will see this picture in the Clemson World and or on the Alumni Page. They were AWESOME hospitalble, cool, wonderful, hosts, and I took me to see a lot of very cool things on the LucasFilms Presidio campus. (Sorry my adoring readers, I couldn’t take pictures in the facility). It was a very unique experience that I felt honored and previledged to be shown. Of course they could not let me see things that are in current production but it was just awesome. I am going to have to watch some movies again to see some of the stuff I got to see. I cannot express what wonderful hosts James and Chris were. They help to serve as proof to the value of a great Clemson education and networking. I truly believe that they would be great mentors for students in our Computer Science and Digital Programs. I caught the bus back to the hotel and was then off to my next adventure.

In order to save money I had purchased a City Pass which I would highly recommend to people visiting the city. It is good for 7 consecutive days. It had a 7day muni/cable car passport, one cruise on the blue & gold fleet, one general admission to the Aquarium of the Bay, one general admission to deYoung Museum/Legion of Honor, Exploratorium, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Asian Art museum PLUS a number of discounts. The hotel is in walking distance for a lot of these attractions.
Since I have been and will be in class for most of my stay I will not get to enjoy most of the attractions, but nevertheless if I need to get anywhere it is a GREAT deal. Today, as you can see form pictures... I toured the aquarium.

In the evening we(Newell, Courtney, Denise & I) caught a cab to Union Square and dined at Daily Grill San Francisco. We had a fabulous time (sorry there aren’t a lot of pictures from the evening). After he Grill we went on a hunt for a place to have a drink… first stop really nice hotel… but spooky 70s atmosphere and very few patrons… then Courtney recalled going to Top of the Mark on a pervious visit. .. so then we were off… now little did we realize we were on a 4 block 45 to 50 degree walk which was hilarious all by itself (man am I terribly out of shape). By the time we go to the Mark we had to take a break out front so that we would not be out of breath when we entered…however when we sat down at our seats the view of the nighttime city was absolutely beautiful (which we all recognized between our pants of air…lol) … Denise and I called it a night after that and took a taxi ride home… while Newell and Courtney are still exploring San Francisco as we speak.

I must let Kris & Ed know that we love and miss you (Kris, my boyfriend and Ed, Denise’s husband). We are having a spectacular time and cannot wait to see you. To my parents … I love you, miss you and thank you for raising me to be the lady I am today! To my sister, yes you… Love and miss you too… Friends and other family hope to hear from you soon… leave a message on the blog to let me know you stopped by.

Day 2: Fundrasing School, Pier 39, & Chinatown

The day started with a 8:00 registration for the fundraising school. We had a continental breakfast which was all the food they were/are providing. I learned alot today about tax and planned giving terminology, learned good things to share with my ambassadors and others interested in planned giving for the library. I learned a simple way to help discover a number of potentially unknown planned gifts, and much more. Honestly I am learning alot in this class and the instructors are awesome. I truthfully wasn't sleepy at all during the session. During Day 1 at my table was Courtney(Texas), Denise(Colorado), Leslie (San Luis Obispo, CA), & John (CA).

For our lunch break Courtney, Denise, Newell (IN), and I went to Swiss Louis Italian & Seafood Restaurant on Pier 39. It was good however our server was having serious issues separating our checks (bless her heart). You can see some of the pictures from our view at lunchtime of Alcatraz, seals, and the city...

Okay and so no nap, but hey... I called more Clemson Alumni...got to talk to a really nice mother and left a few messages... we will see what happens.

For dinner Denise suggested that we go to Chinatown... so we talked with the concierge, got ideas and were on our way. We first said we were going to take a taxi but it was so nice out that we simply walked. We had a glass of wine at IDEALe Ristorante Bar. Then were off to Chinatown to enjoy dinner at House of Nanking. At House of Nanking the waiter asked if it was our first time dining and when we responded no (however it was Denise's 2nd time) he took our menus and said... trust me... and walked off (which Denise warned us he would do). It was great we had a little of a lot of things and we enjoyed them thoroughly. Well that was it for day 2... come back tomorrow for Day 3...

Built to fulfill the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who left funds to be used to beautify the city she loved, Coit Tower is an icon on the San Francisco skyline, a simple tower crowning Telegraph Hill overlooking the San Francisco waterfront.
Coit Tower visitors come here mostly for the views: sweeping waterfront vistas from the parking lot and observation deck, and for cityscapes best seen from the small park behind the tower.

Not to be missed are the murals decorating the lobby, considered to be one of California's best examples of depression-era public art. Part of a Public Works of Art Project, they were painted in 1934 by 25 artists. Done in Diego Rivera's social realism style, they are sympathetic portrayals of the daily life of working class Californians during the depression.

Because some people felt the murals were subversive and depicted "Communist" themes, the authorities delayed the opening of Coit Tower for several months. Already outraged by the shooting deaths of two strikers during the Longshoremen's Strike of 1934, the working community was upset even further by this delay, adding to the general distrust of authority.

The lobby murals continue behind a door next to the gift shop, up the stairs and around the second floor. This area is closed to the general public, except during free guided Coit Tower tours given by City Guides.

You'll often hear tour guides and others claiming that Coit Tower is supposed to look like the nozzle of a fire hose, but designers Arthur Brown Jr. and Henry Howard always denied it, and in fact, it looks more like the towers at London's Battersea Power Station, completed one year earlier.

Despite the fact that Coit Tower has an elevator, it is not wheelchair accessible because of the steps at its base and a short staircase between the elevator landing and the observation level.

Hi Everyone! I have arrived safely in San Francisco. I am staying in Fisherman’s Wharf. I have been told by many locals that I have been placed in a high tourist area... and I need to venture out.

I must say, I slept 90% of the flight from CTL to SFO which is a good thing because I only got a “Snack Mix” and two juices the entire flight. I typically pack snacks… what is WRONG with me? Lolol… Nevertheless, I was starving when I got here and
since I am in a tourist spot…I walked out the door of my hotel and in less than a block I was stopping at Johnny Rockets…lol… I know...not branching out too much… but hey… we don’t have them at home :) After sleeping off my hunger headache I contacted my friend Adora, who is an absolute gem. She came got me out of the hotel room and treated me to dinner at Alioto’s where the food was delish. Before I leave I will have to add a picture of me and Adora on her job. For most of you facebook, myspacers, you will appreciate
that she works at SLIDE. Tomorrow is the first day of my conference…after class (and probably a nap) I will be trying to touch bases with more Clemson “folks”… Until tomorrow.

Today's feature is close to my heart because I was the first graduate assistant for the CALL ME MISTER PROGRAM...and to see how far it has come and where it is going is a great thing...

Tomorrow : Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 9:30 p.m.

The Call Me MISTER program will be the subject of a documentary featuring several of its graduates to be aired Thursday, February 28th at 9:30 p.m. on the South Carolina ETV public broadcasting network.

The 30-minute documentary was produced, directed and narrated by Aretta Jenkins, founder of CornBread Chronicles, LLC. Jenkins, a Clemson University graduate and upstate oral historian tells the Call Me MISTER story by connecting the family and community roots of several graduates with their motivation to become successful teachers. Hayward Jean, Damon Qualls, Zebulun Dinkins and Justin Ballenger all have a powerful story to tell about survival, perseverance, inspiration and hope in the future. Jenkins states, “the context of their lives and their ability to transcend their sociological circumstances is both their motivation and secret for personal development and success.” Each of these young men can identify “key family members and mentors, who have protected and enriched their lives” stated Jenkins.
Dr. Roy Jones, Executive Director of the Clemson based Call Me MISTER program, agrees stating, “the nuclear and extended family, as well as the surrounding community is a significant reality in the lives of MISTERs and their potential effectiveness as teacher-leader advocates for education.”

The purpose of the Call Me MISTER (acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader, more diverse background particularly among the State’s lowest performing elementary schools.

Kayla Shadowing...

The day before yesterday my cousin Kayla shadowed me. Wow…that makes me feel older… I remember shadowing people when I was around her age. Nonetheless, I took her to Special Collections where she learned about a time when people thought it was a good idea to plant cudzu, some rare things that Clemson Libraries, and other things.
She also toured the Architecture Library and got to see some of the models that the students had done of the Anderson downtown. After turning Special Collections, the Architecture Library, and Cooper Library… some of the places for which I raise money…we then went to lunch at the Hendrix Center where believe it or not she found something she would actually eat for lunch… After lunch
we then went over to Development where she could see the stewarding and researching process of development… she helped me get that office a little more organized for potential donors. Thanks Kayla!

Political emails fly fast, but are readers validating content?

When reseraching what I wanted to say about this topic, I found a fellow blogger that said EXACTLY what I was thinking. I will cut and paste his content but, you can see where it was originally posted by clicking here I too received the email that is mentioned below...

Validating the accuracy and reliability of information we read online, both on the web and via email, is an essential literacy skill in the 21st century for adults as well as young people. An email I received this evening from someone in my family provides a dramatic case in point.

The email which was forwarded begins:

This is fairly interesting…

Who is Barack Obama?
Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu , Hawaii , to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel , Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas .

The message goes one to assert that Senator Obama’s father is a “radical Muslim,” and Obama is a Muslim himself. The focus of the message is to create fear about a possible Obama presidency and generate opposition to his candidacy among voters.

These allegations are serious. I would like to think everyone who receives an email like this will take the 15 seconds required to do a quick Snopes.com check to verify the information. The fact that this particular email, and others like them, are regularly forwarded along every day by well-meaning but poorly informed Internet users is distressing. I had a conversation with someone in my office just last week about Senator Obama’s candidacy, and her comment was, “I’m pretty concerned over all that Muslim stuff.” I am pretty sure email messages like this one planted the false seed of uncertainty which was the root of her “concerns.”

A fast search on Snopes for “Who is Barack Obama” brings up a through explanation which reveals this email to be false and misleading. As usual, the Snopes.com authors go through the claims included in this email point by point and include an extensive list of referenced sources at the bottom of the article:

Why do many people persist in forwarding along emails like this one, which can be VERY quickly debunked? I do not know all the reasons, but I suspect there are several keys:

FEAR: Many people thrive on controversy and news which inspires or incites fear. Fear is a powerful motivator. When we allow ourselves to be directed by fear, rather than reason, we are naturally less able (physically) to make informed decisions and use logic. I think a primary reason people forward these types of messages rather than validating and debunking them is that they are AFRAID. Messages of FEAR often work. People get scared, and they are therefore malleable in the hands of the architects of the propaganda who wrote and disseminated the false, misleading, and fear-encouraging messages in the first place. Forwarding this message to other people is EXACTLY what the anti-Obama Presidency author of this fictitious email wants people to do. Those who allow themselves to directed by their fear play right into the hands of others who seek to manipulate and distort the truth to serve their own ends.

LAZINESS: It’s easier to click the forward button and the send button rather than think critically. Critical thinking takes brain power. It takes energy. Many times, I think people (both young and old) tend to be lazy. Should I check out that claim with a quick trip to Snopes? Should I do a Google search on that message before I forward it to my entire address book? Of course you should. To fail in that requirement is to fall short in our obligations to support the dissemination of accurate and valid information. Sadly, laziness in thinking (or NOT thinking) is common in our society. This is not just true in many schools, it’s true of lots of people who long ago left the classroom.

IGNORANCE: People don’t know how to validate information properly. Issues of fear and laziness aside, this reason is possibly one of the most pressing that we, as educators, should take seriously. Are we teaching our students (and learning with our students) how to validate information properly and thoroughly? Have we considered ourselves instruments of a dishonest propaganda machine, if we thoughtlessly forward on emails like this one to others?

Keep an Open Mind...Politics

Senator John Edwards visited the campus of Clemson University today, and an office mate sent out an email to many in the office inviting them to come here him speak. I do not profess support of any candidate but I do have an open mind, therefore I thought it would be a good idea to go and see what he had to say. However, I was slightly disturbed when I heard someone’s response to my coworker when he orally invited her. Her response was simply, I’m Republican. That raised all kinds of red flags to me. Immediately the following questions popped in my mind...

•So if one am a professed Republican, Democrat, or Independent… Does that mean that one listens only to politicians or causes supported by that party?
•How many registered voters out there have this mentality?

Senator McCain also spoke at Clemson, however I did not get the opportunity to hear him speak because I had appointments that morning, however I would have went to hear him had I had the time and opportunity.

To those out there that may have had the same thought process of the young lady who responded, I’m Republican, I pose these thoughts and questions

•If by chance this person or someone with similar ideas wins the election wouldn’t you want to know what they believe and are talking about
•What if by chance you agree with something you hear, wouldn’t you want to see where the candidate or party you support stands on this subject
•Do you fear that exposure to new or different ideas or beliefs than you are typically exposed to may harm your thinking?

Food for thought, not bashing or criticizing anyone. I just want all registered voters to have an open mind.

2007 Resolution Results

On January 10, 2007 I made New Year's Resolution for 2007. What better time than New Year's Eve to revisit those that I made public....

Next to share some of my resolutions for 2007 and yes I am one of those people who make resolutions :) . Keeping it simple this year...

1-go to the gym at least once a month (hey a girl has to start somewhere
2-do a minimum of 100 sit-ups per week
3-learn to swim

loose 10 lbs (and not gain them back :) )
4-improve my financial situation by positive measures
5-be a positive source of inspiration for all that I encounter

Private Resolutions made with a close friend
1 - DB & LCG agree to pay off all our debit by 12.31.07
2 - DB is going to loose 30 lbs
3 - LCG is going to loose 10 lbs
4 - LCG will get a XXX Salary increase
5 - LCG is going to get an Office

Results...

1-2...I did not succeed with either of these and I do not believe it is a good idea for anyone to make resolutions that are exercise related

3... SUCCEEDED! - My boyfriend took the time to teach me how to swim, I am no olympian but I can survive! YEAH
4... SUCCEEDED! - I still have a long way to go but am thankful for my many blessings
5... Hope I succeeded! - This is something I cannot really tell a result I have to have feedback from those I met and have known and how I have impacted them this year. If you care to leave a response to this... please do

Softening Rough Dry Elbows

I do not know how many of you struggle with dry skin, but I DO! This tip came from a makeover solutions website:

Don't go further than your pantry for a solution to those rough leathery elbows. First, cut the toes off a clean pair of cotton tube socks; then smooth a layer of Crisco (or other brand of vegetable shortening) over elbows and pull the socks up to cover. Leave the shortening on for an hour or overnight. This treatment can also be effective on knees, hands, or feet.

Share Your Conversation’s Purpose. The holidays provide the perfect time to share your stories, but let your friends and family know when you just need someone to listen. On the other hand, clearly tell them if an issue needs resolution or if you would like their input.

Pick a New Part. When families gather, members often line up in their pre-assigned positions – bystander, opposer, initiator, peacemaker. While it’s natural that people fall into a role during family conversation, make sure that you don't get pigeonholed in one role.

Realize the Issue Isn’t Always the Issue. Whatever the argument is about – where you’ll spend the holidays, who is buying what gift, what you’re having for the festive dinner – chances are this isn’t the real issue driving the dispute. If the conversation becomes difficult, you really are fighting about how you feel you are being treated by the other.

Stop the ‘Hit and Run’ with Humor. You pass the gravy and a family member hands back a sarcastic remark. Next time that happens, don’t ignore the hurtful comment, but respond – with a bit of humor. However, don’t leave it at that, because you’ve simply returned a funny quip for their sarcastic comment. Ask them to expand on what they’ve said and why they made the original comment.

Ask Questions, Don’t Assume. Never assume you know someone else’s intentions. Be an active listener and ask questions. Be curious about why someone feels the way they do or interpreted a situation the way they did.

Best Ways to Bump Up Your 'Good' Cholesterol

HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) helps to prevent our arteries from becoming blocked due to LDL (the bad cholesterol). It does this by "hauling" away the excess cholesterol lining the walls of our blood vessels, then bringing it back to the liver for reprocessing. This in turn helps to keep our arteries clear from a sticky build-up. And, if your levels of HDL are high enough (a level of 40 and above in males, 50 and above in females), it can also decrease your risk for a heart attack.

Raising HDL levels is important and I'll tell you why: For every one-point increase in HDL, there is a 3 percent decrease in a person's risk of suffering a fatal heart attack. There are two main ways to increase these levels: lifestyle modifications and medication therapy.

Lifestyle Modifications

Exercise. Just 20-30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days of the week can jump-start your HDL in the right direction.

Break the tobacco habit. Quitting smoking can raise your HDL levels by about four points.

Lose weight. Losing 10 pounds can increase your HDL by one and a half points. Aim for a weight loss goal to achieve a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or below.

Choose the better fat. Minimize the saturated and trans fats in your diet. These substances increase the bad cholesterol while decreasing your good cholesterol. Instead, switch to products containing unsaturated fats (olive, canola, flaxseed, etc.). These may raise your HDL levels. However, this is not a free fatty-pass, because we still have to watch the calories!

Cut back on simple carbohydrates. Cakes, cookies and highly processed cereals and breads are high-glycemic foods that can lower your HDL and raise the levels of another fat in your bloodstream, triglycerides.

Drink alcohol in moderation, with a caveat! Alcohol should not be considered medicine—if you don't drink, don't start—but some studies have found mild alcohol consumption (one drink per day for women, two for men) can raise HDL by up to four points. Important caveat: Alcohol may be harmful to those with liver or addiction problems. In these cases, the risks certainly outweigh the benefits.

Feast on cold-water fish. Eating salmon, mackerel or other fish from icy waters several times a week can have a very positive effect on your HDL levels. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which may help to explain their health benefits.

Add fiber. The soluble fiber found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains might boost your HDL.

Avoid anabolic steroids. These decrease your HDL levels, in addition to all their other potential health dangers.

Medication Therapy

Niacin, which is also known as nicotinic acid or vitamin B3. This is by far our best therapy for raising HDL levels. Studies have shown increases of 20 percent to 35 percent. Unfortunately, every rose has its thorn, and niacin has a big one called side effects (flushing, racing heart, etc). We often prescribe low doses in the beginning to minimize these effects. (There is also a non-prescription form of niacin called hexanicotinate, which may be better tolerated but is nowhere near as effective).

Fibrates, including fenofibrate and gemfibrozil. This category of medication has the potential to boost your HDL by up to 20 percent. Side effects may include upset stomach and diarrhea.

Statins. These are better known for their remarkable ability to lower the harmful LDL cholesterol. However, certain drugs within this class (atorvastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin) can raise HDL by up to 15 percent.

I am a big believer in taking charge of your health. Please know your HDL level and remember that simple changes can dramatically improve your health.

Job Application- Air Traffic Controller (AGES 18-31)

This email was sent to me from a friend.

You have or know kids between the ages of 18-31 with a high school diploma.

The Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for air traffic controller school. We all have kids and know kids in the right age group (under 31) and with some effort they could reach a salary of over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years. You need only a high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the exam.

They need to go to faa.gov for details and to fill out the application immediately - even if they do not know if they'd want to attend immediately - it's the federal government and it may take them months to call. The key is to apply NOW. There will be a lot of retirements coming up rather quickly and they need to line up training to accommodate these openings. It it my understanding that the FAA rarely has an open application such as this and that the jobs are coveted.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance into the training program -after-which you can transfer anywhere in the country that has a tower.

This message was sent to me by one of my dearest cousin's I thought it may just inspire someone to do something nice for someone else. It is a little lengthy but just what the doctor ordered!

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.'

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, 'And think of me.' He waited until she started her car and drove off.

It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.' Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day.

That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard.... She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, 'Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.'

There is an old saying 'What goes around comes around.' Today I sent you this story and I'm asking you to pass it on. Let this light shine.

Someone recently shared this story with me. I felt it came at a time that impacted me and others in my life. What I took from this story was that we can go through a lot in life that we have felt embodied or encompassed by, but it is all we have known. However, in order to grow we must make ourselves vulnerable (with no guarantee that this vulnerability will not hurt us). We must allow the time to elapse for us to grow a new shell. Realizing that we ourselves did not change, our experiences of the past are still the same, however we have allowed ourselves to emerge into something greater where we can reach our full potential. I hope this blog inspires someone today.

I vented through an e-discussion earlier this week with friends about how often it seems that now that I am an adult, I often face those in the "adult world" that

are back stabbers
are gossipers
don't like to talk to you about a situation but talk ABOUT you to others
don't work together when you are trying to accomplish the same goal
don't behave nicely or follow the "Golden Rule"
simply put....are what we often refer to as "childish"....

and how all these things and behaviors frustrated me. I must admit I found her response enlightening and very true.

Part 1 of her response: The Relation to My Situation

"You have people that you work with on a daily basis, people who you know could accomplish things well as a team, however, they get so worked up in how things will affect them, or start focusing on causing you problems just so they look better. It is sooooo irritating!! "

Part 2 : The Reality of it All

"It is strange how as a kid and teenager and even college student, you are always taught how to behave and how to respect others. Told to play nice and do things as a team. To help others, and just grow up. But, when you are a grown up, everyone else- including other adults, are still acting like kids trying to step on other peoples sandcastles or take other peoples toys!!"

In her response I think that Matthew 18:3 took on another meaning for me now... something that people should really think about... possibly a new spin on the meaning of that verse.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Without any sort of fanfare, AT&T Inc. has started offering a broadband Internet service for $10 a month, cheaper than any advertised plan. The DSL, or digital subscriber line, plan introduced .... is part of the concessions made by AT&T to the Federal Communications Commission to get its $86 billion acquisition of BellSouth Corp. approved last December.

The $10 offer is available to customers in the 22-state AT&T service region, which includes former BellSouth areas, who have never had AT&T or BellSouth broadband, spokesman Michael Coe confirmed Monday. Local phone service and a one-year contract are required. The modem is free.

The plan was not mentioned in a .... news release about AT&T's DSL plans, and is slightly hidden on the AT&T Web site. A page describing DSL options doesn't mention it, but clicking a link for "Term contract plans" reveals it. It's also presented to customers who go into the application process, Coe said.

The service provides download speeds of up to 768 kilobits per second and
upload speeds of up to 128 kbps, matching the speeds of the cheapest advertised AT&T plan, which costs $19.95 per month in the nine-state former BellSouth area and $14.99 in the 13 states covered by AT&T before the acquisition.

BellSouth generally had higher prices for DSL before it was acquired, and the
price difference persists, though AT&T did cut the price of the cheapest advertised plan in the Southeast region by $5 from $24.95 on Saturday.

The agreement with the FCC required the company to offer the plan for at
least 2 1/2 years. Coe said he could not comment on future advertising plans for the offer.

The introduction of the plan, slightly before the deadline at the end of June, was first reported by The Tennessean in Nashville.

Another concession to the FCC is yet to come: a plan for DSL that doesn't require local phone service. AT&T has another six months to introduce that option, which should cost at most $19.95 per month.

Consumer advocates have fought for this so-called "naked DSL plan," because DSL can carry Internet-based phone calls for less than the price of local phone service. However, at 768 kbps, the download speed may be too low to appeal to the relatively sophisticated customers who use the Internet for phone calls.

I have been running the roads from wedding to wedding to work stuff. Friday was just an emotionally stressing day for me for whatever reason from continued townhome issues to people ignoring my plea for encouragement to people just urkin' me. There was some light at the end of the tunnel however (Thanks Kris & Anca)...so I decided to make this weekend "Relaxing Weekend: 1 '07" (RW1'07). I watched a movie, my boyfriend's family brought food to the house we ate and just hung out at the pool. All and all a good weekend of relaxation.

The movie I watched was Tyler Perry's : Daddy's Girls. In this movie Bishop Eddie Long preaches a short sermon on the challenges faced often when one tries to do good in life. He said "In doing good you shall grow weary.... there is no sin in growing weary ... the sin is giving up. " This scene from the movie not only moved, but inspired me because it seems that the harder I try to do good the more people are fighting against me. You may ask why am I sharing this....I am doing so to encourage other and tell them to hold on for your blessing is just on the next horizion. I don't know if your horizon is a day away or five years away....It will not be easy and if it is easy it will not be easy to maintain without work and prayer.

I am here to let you know that it is okay if you have to take care of you first before you can help others. Do not let others get you down pray, pray pray. Doing good makes you feel good from the depths of your soul if you do it with sincereity. I hope that each of you have a great week to come and a wonderful life! Please pray for me!

I am speaking of the Driving Type I call... THE REGULATOR...Okay this is one of those Liza Corrine... just need to get off her chest... and wanting to know if anyone out there agrees with me. How many of you are tired of those people who drive slow in the left lane that are going the "speed limit"... they are acting like it is there civic duty to not let those behind them pass... and keep everyone under the speed limit. I appreciate the thought but the left lane is for passing! Not for keeping traffic at a steady flow. IF people are indeed speeding... the law enforcement will handle this if they so choose. So a helpful note to all you out there ... please do not drive slow in the fast/passing lane.... you are only causing road rage.

My Final Day in Banff...

The conference was wonderful! Not only because of its location but because of the many things I came away knowing as well as the networking foundations that were built. Making connections with people from Scotland to California.

The town of Banff was quite lovely. Nestled in a valley in the Canadian Rockies. I stayed at the Rimrock Resort and the conference sessions were held in The Fairmont - Banff Springs. Both places were wonderful establishments with very friendly staff.

On the third evening we enjoyed a Westernn outting Canadian style. It was great... from line dancing to 10 gallon hats... everyone enjoyed themselves.

Our last night of the conference we had a business formal banquet. The weather was nice most of the time... however this morning when I opened my windows there was snow!... Yes snow in May. .. below are a few more pictures from this event.

Hello Everyone!

Lots of things have been going on since I started the February series... both good and and bad. I first of all would like to take a moment to say thanks for taking the time to read my blog... whether it is to learn a little about me, for long distance friends to keep up with what is going on in the life of Liza Corrine, or just because you are bored. I appreciate your comments and advice.
I have been meaning to write something since late April when I began my new job. If you are a friend or family member and do not know what that new job is email me and I will tell you! I am very excited about this new adventure. I would like to thank my wonderful parents, sister, boyfriend and friends for being their to encourage and guide me through many furstrations with jobs in the past. I realize that things are not always going to be perfect but I thank God for each of the persons mentioned who encouraged me constantly when employment times were not so good. I sincerely want to say thank you...and when I say "friends"... you know EXACTLY who you are.... the person(s) who made me laugh as I sat in an office enjoying what I was doing but not really getting what I deserved... those that were there via phone when I just couldn't take much more... and so many more... thank you!

There were MANY times that I refered to this scripture Jer 29:11 (NIV) "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." I would like to share this with anyone stuggling with things they just cannot understand in life. Be encouraged. I do not like to write long blogs because I feel that if they are too long people will not want to read them. So I will stop for now... in the coming weeks I plan to write on the following topics so stay tuned...

If you refer to Ms. Ambord’s book she tells you of a website that lists several outlets. One of my favorites is the Tanger Factory Outlets. If you take the time to sign up to be in their frequent shoppers club you can save even more. It costs a one time fee of $10 to join unless you are a student, employee of a university, or blessed to be above a 55 (check the age). For these select groups it is $5. Once you join simply show them your TangerClub Card and get the coupon booklet that other visitors pay $5 to receive for free.

My day began with this beautiful balloon boquet to your right... aww.. how sweet :) ...

For several years now I have helped a florist with their Valentine’s Day deliveries. This year is not different…Dr. K and I were out and about on our local delivery route delivering Valentine’s wishes. So, if you were wondering why you didn’t get a Happy Valentine’s Day wish from me, via the internet, that is why. You see one of my former college professor’s wife owns the shop, so I help them out. Regardless of my location, if possible, I will try to come and help this florist on Valentine’s Day because not only am I helping out a friend but I enjoy spreading joy, smiles, and love to a lot of people. And this year, is like all other years… there is a story. Yep a story…well…actually two.

Story No.1… Dr. K had been driving around for most of the morning and prepping arrangements while I jumped out and delivered them. Well he got excited and wanted to make a delivery since 1) we were parked safely 2) we had several deliveries in a close proximity and 3) I think he enjoys just as much as I do seeing smiles on faces…. As I sat in the van he returned with a puzzled look on his face. And said in his oh so proper voice, “That was very interesting… I can say I don’t believe I have experienced a delivery like that before” … well it turns out that on his maybe second delivery of the morning the customer wasn’t happy with her product, threw it on the ground, fussed to the air a little bit and wished him a nice day. Poor thing… all we were trying to do is deliver happiness… I just laughed… we informed the shop of a pending call… and we continued with our deliveries… needless to say I don’t think Dr. K volunteered to deliver too many others.

Story No. 2…Since Dr. K and I have been doing deliveries so long his wife didn’t mind giving us the loaner van that was in… well… not the best of condition…. While driving along we go over a drain grill rather quickly… and suddenly… we heard a metal to concrete sound…. I asked Dr. K should I get out and see what it was… and he said in his always proper tone… “I believe you should” … since he was driving…. I get out…look under the van…. Calmly get back in… close the door ….and turn to him and say “I believe our exhaust is on the ground”… he kind of gives me the… humm look… because he is just not one to get too excited about anything… so we pulled to our next location which wasn’t far…where he pulled off the part that was dragging and again… “needless to say”… we were back to the shop shortly after that

It is always a blast delivery flowers… you never know what to expect…

On a side note… I would like to thank the Love of My Life for a wonderful Valentine’s Day…. The best I have had … from your thoughtful notes… to your surprise visits… thank you… I LOVE YOU bunches!

Many of you may or may not know but I have said for YEARS that I am going to write a few books, but I never can seem to properly express myself. To help me get started I am going to write a continuous series of mini blogs by Liza Corrine and see how this goes. The inpiration for the Prioritizing Life 101 Series by Liza Corrine was inspired by the following email forward from my friend Yvonne (Bay Shore, NY):

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day
are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise
jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the
jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. Then students responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. "Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Keep learning to improve yourself. Extremely wealthy people believe that the greatest asset in the world is your mind. Your mind shapes your destiny. Invest in your greatest asset by reading books, listening to audio tapes or attending seminars.

LEVERAGE
Extremely wealthy people do not do everything themselves. They know when to let go. They hire the right people to do it. Bill Gates doesn't write software, he hires programmers to do it. To be very rich, you must know how to leverage. Hire people and use tools to do some of your work. If you do not leverage, there is so much that you can do, and this puts a limit on how much money you can make.

Did you know that a lot of people who become wealthy through inheritance or though hard work tends to purchase used cars?

Commonly my friends tease me because I am rather an economical shopper. I have been called crazy for going to after thanksgiving sales and even my boyfriend calls me his “frugal baby”, and this is okay with me. I hope that even when I am in a better financial situation I maintain my frugal ways. I believe that we develop such ways out of necessity or greed. As for me… it isn’t greed but necessity and sometimes kind of fun.

(Part 1: Nos. 1-5)

Please note I use terms “The Release” aka pros, benefits, etc. & “The Catch” aka cons, negatives, costs, etc.

Clip Coupons: Don’t be above this. You can clip coupons while you are sitting watching television. THE RELEASE: They are pieces of paper that when scanned at the appropriate place of business can save you money. THE CATCH: You have to pay attention to expiration dates and maintain a place to keep your coupons.
Shop Stores like Tuesday Morning, TJ Maxx, Ross’s, etc: THE RELEASE: These stores have a lot of the name brand items (if you are into that type thing) for much cheaper prices THE CATCH: Items are often limited and/or out of season. These places can be disorganized.
When Shopping Online SEARCH for COUPON CODES: Take a moment before you check out and visit your favorite search engine (in my case Google) and search for the store you are about to make a purchase followed by the word coupon code (i.e. Target Coupon Code) . You can check the first couple of links and see if there is anything that you can use. OR you can bookmark a few that I use. Current Codes.com or Rebate Place.com THE RELEASE: You often save a decent amount of money if you only take the time to fill out the paperwork. Vendors count on you not wanting to take the time to do this. THE CATCH: It can cost you a stamp and time to fill out the forms.
Shop After Thanksgiving Day Sales: Better known as BLACK FRIDAY. If you lay out sale papers, choose the items you would like to purchase, then make a plan of action...THE RELEASE: you can save hundreds of dollars. THE CATCH: There can be negatives to this event… and that is what it is … an event! If you pick the HOT SPOT (the store that EVERYONE who is Black Friday Shopping has selected you could be in line for hours. Some shoppers are CRAZY!

Today's Recipe

Banana Cake

1 ¼ cups sugar

½ cup butter

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

4 tablespoons sour cream

3/4 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)

1 cup banana, mashed

1 ½ cups pastry or cake flour

1 teaspoon vanilla

1. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs, beaten very lightly, and the baking soda, dissolved in the sour cream.
2. Beat well, then add bananas, flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and vanilla.
3. Bake in a well greased loaf pan, 7-1/4 x 11-1/4 x 1-1/2 inch, in 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven.
4. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
5. Serving suggestion: cool cake and cut into layers and fill with cream cheese frosting, or spread with whipped cream cheese just before serving.

Recipe can be doubled and baked in 10 inch round pans.

AAP Bachelorette Weekend

Good Afternoon Everyone! For many of my friends and readers who have been wondering why I have been MIA a lot of it is because my bestest friends Alyssa is getting married and I am a bridesmaid. We have been to Gastonia for an Engagement party, to Fort Lawn for a Christmas Shower, to Easley for a Kitchen Shower, and the latest is a Bachelorette Party on Sullivan's Island. (Can you believe it and I/we haven't been able to go to EVERYTHING)... Poor Alyssa I know she is tired.. but having a great time! It has been a lot of fun for me and I wanted to share a picture of a group of us at Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island. We had a blast! Only a few more weeks until the big day! Congratulations Alyssa!

Today's Recipe

Lasagna

12 ounces bulk Italian or pork sausage or ground beef

1 cup chopped onion (1 large) 2 cloves garlic, minced ** I use more garlic **

1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes, undrained

1 8-ounce can tomato sauce 1 tablespoon dried

Italian seasoning, crushed

1 teaspoon fennel seeds, crushed (optional)

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

6 dried lasagna noodles

1 egg, beaten

1 15-ounce container ricotta cheese or 2 cups cream-style cottage cheese, drained

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

6 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

1. For sauce, in a large saucepan cook sausage, onion, and garlic until meat is brown. Drain. 2. Stir undrained tomatoes, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds (if desired), and black pepper into meat mixture. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Meanwhile, cook noodles for 10 to 12 minutes or until tender but still firm. Drain noodles; rinse with cold water. Drain well; set aside.4. For filling, combine egg, ricotta, and the 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Set aside. 5. Spread about 1/2 cup of the sauce over the bottom of a 2-quart rectangular baking dish. Layer half of the cooked noodles in the bottom of the dish, trimming or overlapping as necessary to fit. Spread with half of the filling. Top with half of the remaining meat sauce and half of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers. If desired, sprinkle additional Parmesan cheese over top. 6. Place baking dish on a baking sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until heated through. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. 7. Makes 8 servings 8. Make-ahead directions: Prepare as above through Step 5. Cover unbaked lasagna; chill for up to 24 hours. To serve, bake, covered, in a 375 degree F oven for 40 minutes. Uncover; bake about 20 minutes more or until heated through. Let stand for10 minutes before serving.
